In Silence: Why We Pray by Donald Spoto ISBN: 0-670-03347-2
This book is a study of prayer from many faith perspectives throughout history and cultures. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of the prayer experience (prayer as...dialogue, petition, forgiveness, suffering, abandonment, serenity, loving, transformation, and silence). The author offers his book in the spirit of what he calls a quietly overwhelming question "What can we do - what can any of us do - but throw ourselves into the arms of God?" I recommend this book for those who are curious to learn more about silent prayer as a human experience that reaches beyond any particular faith. - Jean Joklik
- FYI. The current issue of the periodical Parabola on the newstand is devoted to the same topic, Silence, as found in different faith traditions. - RonB
Several new books on Centering Prayer have been released: Centering Prayer and the Healing of the Unconscious; Spirituality, Contemplation and Transformation (Writings on Centering Prayer); Journey to the Heart: Centering Prayer for Children. Has anyone read any of these? If so, might you write a review of it here? - RonB
